Chapter Twenty-Five

By the time Greta gave Dolores’s name and address to the nurses and got her friend checked into the hospital, Detective McHenry stood off to the side of the ER waiting room. Greta pursed her lips and walked in his direction, figuring she may as well deal with him right away. Like ripping off a Band-Aid…a Band-Aid in need of an attitude adjustment. She couldn’t help the sardonic afterthought.

“I tracked down her daughter’s phone number.” Detective McHenry pushed off the wall as she approached.

Greta stopped short. She hadn’t yet considered contacting Dolores’s family, but she was grateful Detective McHenry had. Knowing Dolores would have Stacey by her side soon was a relief. “Thanks for doing that.”

Detective McHenry gave a decisive nod. “How is Mrs. Jenkins?”

Greta sunk into a blue plastic chair. “They didn’t tell me much. They can’t, since I’m not family. But it’s like the EMTs thought. A broken leg. They were going to take her to surgery.”

Detective McHenry stood in front of her, his wide stance blocking the view of the rest of the waiting room. “I need to take your statement.”

His tone was as unyielding as ever. Would this man always hold her in suspicion?

“What exactly do you want to know?”

The detective sat next to her and pulled out his notebook. “I need you to take me through everything.”

Greta sighed and described the events of the evening, everything from leaving the library until finding Dolores.

“You mentioned you saw Dolores earlier today? How did she seem?” Detective McHenry looked up from his notes and shot her a side-eyed glance.

Greta raised both palms in a shrug. “She was fine. She came in to pick up a book she had on hold. We talked briefly about Franklin. She got borderline emotional, but pulled herself together. We made plans for me to visit after work.” Greta decided against telling the detective what they planned to discuss. He wouldn’t like to hear they were hoping to put their heads together to try and figure out what happened to their friend, what with expressly forbidding her to carry out an amateur investigation and all. She cleared her throat. “That’s why I looked around for her when she didn’t answer my knock. It isn’t like her to commit to something and not follow through.”

“I see.” The detective jotted down a line in his notebook. “And can anyone confirm your whereabouts this afternoon?”

Greta winced and readjusted her position in the chair. She’d been expecting this question, but it still stung. “You actually think I had something to do with this?”

Detective McHenry stared at his notebook for a beat longer before raising his head, angling his upper body in her direction, and bringing his gaze to hers. “Answer the question, Miss Plank.”

Greta crossed her arms over her chest. “Yes, both Josie and Iris and half a dozen library patrons can vouch for where I was this afternoon. I worked through lunch, and we all left the building together at five o’clock.”

Detective McHenry made another inscription, and his nonchalance wormed its way under her skin.
